Vytautas Michelkevičius

Curator/Commissioner Vytautas Michelkevičius,
artistic director of the Nida Art Colony and
associate professor of Photography and Media Art Department at the Vilnius Academy of Arts

Vytautas Michelkevičius ­is a curator, art and media researcher, and associate professor at Vilnius Academy of Arts. He holds a PhD in Communication and Critical Media Studies from Vilnius University. He has undertaken fellowships at the University of Vienna (Austria) and the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (Germany), including recent post-doc fellowship on artistic research (2013-2015) in Vilnius Academy of Arts.

Vytautas Michelkevičius has authored or edited more than 10 catalogues and books on media theory, art and photography in 2002–2015. Michelkevičius wrote a monograph „The Lithuanian SSR Society of Art Photography (1969-1989). An image production network“(Vilnius Academy of Arts Press, 2011) and now is working on the second one on artistic research mythologies and methodologies.

Michelkevičius co-edited the following publications: Tourists Like Us: Critical Tourism and Contemporary Art (eds. Federica Martini & Vytautas Michelkevičius), Sierre: ECAV, Nida: VAA Press and Nida Art Colony, 2013; Mapping Lithuanian Photography: Histories and Archives (Mene, 2007) with Agnė Narušytė and Lina Michelkevičė, (In)dependent Contemporary Art Histories: Artist-run Initiatives in Lithuania 1987-2011 (Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association, 2011) and (In)dependent Contemporary Art Histories: Artist-run Initiatives in Lithuania 1987-2014 (Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association, 2014) with Kęstutis Šapoka and Generation of the Place: Image, Memory and Fiction in the Baltics (Mene, 2011), and curated the exhibition of the same name at Tallinn Exhibition Hall (Estonia) in 2011. Among his curatorial projects is a series of yearly Inter-format Symposium in Nida Art Colony since 2011. In 2005–2009 he was the editor-in-chief of the online media culture journal Balsas.cc.
